  Wappenschild von Schottland „In Gold mit einem roten Doppellilienbord ein steigender (roter) Löwe.“ (engl. Or, a lion rampant within a double tressure flory counter-flory Gules.). König Wilhelm I. der Löwe führte es als erster Herrscher nach 1165 ein, einen roten aufrechten Löwen mit gegabeltem Schwanz auf gelbem Feld, und erhielt danach später seinen Beinamen. Er war der Sohn von König David I. und Maud, 2. Countess of Huntingdon. Heinrich war der Erbe des Königreichs Alba und (durch seine Mutter) Earl of the Honour of Huntingdon and Northampton. Heinrich war nach seinem Onkel, König Heinrich I. von England benannt. Er heiratete Ada de Warenne, Tochter von William de Warenne, 2. Earl of Surrey, und Elisabeth von Vermandois.
